He graduated from Emory University followed by the University of Tennessee College of Medicine at the top of his class. He completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by a formal Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship at the Surgical Dermatology Group in Birmingham, Alabama, where he also practiced for the first few years of his career prior to coming to Dallas.
His teaching and research have facilitated over 200 publications in major medical journals with multiple roles as a primary investigator in clinical trials.
He has contributed chapters to several books, has authored 2 textbooks on Mohs surgery and complex facial reconstruction, and has edited 2 editions of Dermatologic Clinics.
He is an active member of dermatologic societies, directed sessions, and has held committee positions and chairmanships in the AAD, ACMS, ASDS, ISDS, is the President of the Dallas Dermatologic Society and an upcoming member of the Board of Directors of the ASDS.
He continues to teach students, residents, and fellows with various speaking engagements nationally and internationally.
